Continuing education should be mandatory for all nursing professionals due to rapid
changes in healthcare skill demands and the evolution of clinical technologies that require
learning new skills and abilities. Continuing education should be a must to address new diseases
and illnesses identified by clinical researchers. The existing data indicate that continuing
education improves the quality of patient care, reduces medical errors, and enhances
collaboration among healthcare professionals (Cole, 2017, p 42). Accordingly, continuing
education affords a nurse the opportunity to explore special nursing areas like hospice, pain
management, and geriatrics that require advanced education (Chism, 2016).

Conclusion

I believe the future of nursing will require nurses to gain advanced knowledge and skills
to respond to health care sector reforms and improve the quality of care. Continuing education
and professional certification enhance the degree of nurse competency, thus leading to positive
patient outcomes and cost savings by hospitals. I am committed to enrolling for an advanced
(MSN) degree in nursing and achieve relevant professional certification.
